Deboxing Bratz (i.e., removing the Bratz doll from the packaging) is an excruciating task and requires a degree in Civil Engineering in order to do it correctly. After all, Isaac Larian, the President and CEO of MGA Entertainment, has a degree in Civil Engineering. Perhaps he designed the Bratz doll packaging to be as miserably frustrating and difficult as it is. However, there is a technique on how to debox Bratz dolls correctly — and properly.
My perception is that MGA Entertainment purposely packages the Bratz dolls in the manner that they do, so that it will be difficult for you, the consumer, to return it to the store if you do not like it. Remember, MGA Entertainment and Isaac Larian want your money! However, they know that you want to make an informed decision about which Bratz dolls that you want to purchase; that's why you can see what the dolls look like before you buy.
When I purchased my first two Bratz dolls, Funk Out! Jade and Funk Out! Dana, in July 2004, I used to rip the packages open and throw the packages in the garbage. This was out of frustration of taking the dolls out of the packages. However, I now regret doing this, since the packages had contained graphics that I wanted to use for some related Bratz stuff that I have been doing for this Bratz Heaven website. Therefore, if you ever plan on purchasing any Bratz dolls in the future, SAVE THE PACKAGING! It could save your life.
Tools you will need for deboxing: Razor blade, nail clipper.
I did the following steps when I deboxed by I-Candy Phoebe doll. This technique probably does not work on all Bratz doll packages, due to the different doll collections that debut and the different packagings of each collection. However, some of these techniques will work, and you can at least use them when you debox your Bratz dolls.
- Stare at the doll inside the package. No, seriously, stare at it and contemplate about how MGA Entertainment could conceive and create a wonderful product such as this. You can feel the love in the room right now. And notice how the Bratz dolls stare back at you. Bratz dolls love you and want to be loved by you. Therefore, they want you to purchase them, so you can take them home and share them with your family and friends.
- Insert a razor blade between where you open the package and the front of the package itself, then slide the blade to cut the tape.
- Slide the packaging out of the plastic casing. It does not matter which side you slide it out, but you should be able to slide it out with no problems. If the packaging is stuck, perhaps there are tabs on the plastic box that are still attached to the packaging. Move the tabs out of the way, then try again.
- Now that you have the packaging out of the box, here is where the fun begins.
- Use the same razor blade you used in step 2 to cut the strings that hold the doll in place. Make sure you cut the strings where they emerge through the holes! Don't just cut the strings wherever you feel like — you may end up cutting the doll's hair by accident.
- If the hair is covering the hole, move the hair out of the way before you cut.
- Use a nail clipper to snap off the plastic hooks around the doll's hands and her stomach. The newer doll collections such as Pretty N' Punk and Live In Concert have eliminated these hooks, but the older collections such as Wild Life Safari and Tokyo-A-Go-Go may still have them.
- There is one hidden hook, where the doll's head is attached to the cardboard. It might be hard to get at it, because of the hair on the doll's head. If you can get to it, clip that hook off with the nail clipper or cut it off with the razor blade. Better to use the razor blade for this.
- You still have the plastic that keeps the doll's feet in place. Use the razor blade to cut the plastic between the doll's feet, then peel the plastic open.
- If the doll is still stuck, check to be sure that you have cut all the strings or clipped all the hooks.
- At this point, you should be able to free the doll from the cardboard.
- When you free the doll from the cardboard, you may lose the feet in the process. Just reach inside the plastic and take out the feet, then snap them back on at the bottom of the leg like you would normally do.
- There may be a plastic hairpiece attached to the hair of the doll. This hairpiece is easily removable, thus no razor blade or nail clipper is required for this. You can just tear it open, and you should have no problems with this.
- Once the doll is completely free from the packaging, comb the doll's hair using a regular comb to get rid of some leftover strings. Don't panic if some of the hair starts to fall out — this is normal. You can use the star-shaped comb that is included with the package, but I use a fine-toothed comb for this and it works wonders.
- If the doll's hair is tied with a rubber band, it is best to just leave the hair as it is unless you are a hairstylist and really want to take a chance to style the hair as you see fit.
- When combing the hair, the hair may become statically charged. The hair on these Bratz dolls is synthetic. Spray Static Guard on the hair, not hairspray. Use the Fresh Scent Static Guard, to simulate hairspray.
- Save the packaging. That Bratz logo might come in handy one day.
- Have fun with your Bratz doll! And always shower it with your love.
I hope that this information helps. If there are any changes on how to debox Bratz dolls, I will update this page with that information. However, what I have described above is a step-by-step primer on how to correctly and properly debox the Bratz dolls from all that miserably complicated packaging. I applied these techniques when I purchased my Bratz I-Candy Phoebe doll, and I hope that you get around to applying these same techniques when you purchase your Bratz dolls. Have fun.
