Notes and Commentary By: Robyn Barnette
What a wonderful project this was. "Danalicious" is the sixth Bratz Photography Project that I've done, and I have never enjoyed doing a Bratz Photography Project quite like this one in a very long time. After the disappointment that followed my previous project "Kool Kat Jade," I felt that I had somehow lost the confidence I had in doing the beautiful photography that I enjoy capturing of my Bratz dolls. However, I was not expecting that the photography would turn out to be as gorgeous and outstanding as what I had accomplished with "Danalicious." I am so proud of how the photography for this project came out, because I believe it truly represents some of the best Bratz photography that I have ever captured. I really could not explain how the photos for "Danalicious" came out as great as they did. I think one of the reasons why was because after the fallout I had following "Kool Kat Jade," I was determined to prove to myself that I really was a great photographer. I knew that I was capable of creating the beautiful photos of my Bratz dolls that Bratz fans have enjoyed since beginning these Bratz Photography Projects a few years ago. And when I found and purchased Bratz Camp Fire Dana from Boscov's Department Store in October 2005, it represented my opportunity to prove how capable I really was. Things appeared to be going pretty well for "Danalicious" when I captured four photos of my Bratz Camp Fire Dana doll during the late fall and early winter. Unfortunately, the project hit a few road blocks: There was a lack of snow in Pennsylvania during the winter season; I was still disappointed after "Kool Kat Jade"; and the musical track that I wanted to use for the video slideshow ("Around The Way Girl" by L.L. Cool J.) had been chosen long before I began photography for this project and would not have worked had I used Bratz Camp Fire Dana for this project. "Danalicious" was eventually halted and restarted in March 2006 using my Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana doll and the entire Bratz Feelin' Pretty collection. Nine weeks and twelve photos later, I am very happy that at long last, this project is completed. Although I was disappointed following "Kool Kat Jade," there was one photo that I captured in "Danalicious" which was a reference to that project. It features both Bratz Feelin' Pretty Jade and Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana lying down on a bed of Easter M&M's candies and paper streamers. The photo is definitely one of my favorite photos in "Danalicious," but it was nothing compared to what has to be one of the best photos that I have ever captured of any Bratz doll: The photo of Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana at Longwood Gardens East Conservatory. I will not go into details about what I went through during the photography or how I captured my Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana doll in that setting, but that photo is a perfect example of how a picture speaks a thousand words. For that particular photo, it speaks just one: Incredible. I am still wondering how I ever captured it, and I have to thank officials from Longwood Gardens for their cooperation in allowing me to film such a photo. Since background is my primary emphasis when shooting photos of my Bratz dolls, among my favorite backgrounds that I enjoy capturing are what I refer to as historical backgrounds. These are backgrounds that feature historical landmarks that had been preserved through funding and community effort. One of the photos that features such a background is the photo of Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana captured at the Moravian Colonial Industrial Quarter. This was an area where Moravians settled over 250 years ago and constructed America's first industrial park. I love how Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana is standing there and taking in all the history that surrounds her. Another photo that features a historical background is the photo of Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana with the Philadelphia Water Works in the background. During the late 1800's, the Water Works was the only source of water for the city of Philadelphia, and what I truly love about the landmark is the Water Works' Greek and Roman architectural design. Furthermore, Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana looks ever so stunning, sitting there on the railing. I love the way that she stares with those eyes. Even her hairstyle was perfect. What was I thinking when I captured that photo? Other spectacular photos that I captured includes one of Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana and Bratz Feelin' Pretty Cloe dressed up in the fashions from the Bratz Ooh La La collection. To keep things consistent, I dressed up Bratz Feelin' Pretty Cloe in Bratz Ooh La La Cloe's second fashions, including the beret and shoes. Same thing with Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana. I was very surprised to see how beautiful they looked in those fashions and how they captured the essence of Paris fashionista Haute Couture wearing them. And the evening dinner photo, despite that it looks as though it was filmed and captured at a fancy restaurant, was actually captured inside my house. What I loved about this particular photo was not just that it was the final photo that I captured in "Danalicious," but that I got both Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana and Bratz Feelin' Pretty Sasha to pose for the camera correctly. It wasn't really an easy photo to capture, but I certainly had fun filming and photographing it. And that's what all these Bratz Photography Projects are about: Having fun. I absolutely had a lot of fun with "Danalicious," and through doing this project I realized that my talents in capturing the photography of my Bratz dolls have finally returned. "Danalicious" was a project that had been long over due — two years long overdue to be exact, but the wait was definitely worth it. And it was quite an adventure as to how I got around to doing this project after all this time! I am very happy that the long road to completing "Danalicious" has finally been realized, but as happy as I am to finally finish this project, I can't help but feel sad, too. This really was a wonderful project, and I wished that I could capture just one more photo of my Bratz Feelin' Pretty Dana doll. However, after nine weeks of doing this project, twelve photos is good enough. It's time for me to say goodbye to "Danalicious" and to look forward to my next Bratz Photography Project. But I hope that I have as much fun doing that project as I did with this one. | |||||||||||||
