Notes and Commentary By: Robyn Barnette
NOTE: THIS PROJECT IS BEING OVERHAULED IN SPRING/SUMMER 2008. Since this is the first set of photos that I was taking of the Bratz dolls, the goal here was for me to properly introduce them. Not only did I want to make sure that the dolls were introduced properly, but I also wanted to showcase what I can do in terms of photography. My primary emphasis in photography is always background, since it fills in the details of the subject that I am taking a photo of. For example, there is one photo of Dana in this section of my photo album that was taken at an abandoned factory. This was inspired by the idea that Dana, like the Bratz dolls themselves, have that urban hip-hop cultural appeal to them. So I thought that it would be perfect for the photo of Dana to take place in an urban industrialized area, and what amazed me about the photo was that it was too deceptive. In other words, my photo of Dana looked as though I used all kinds of digial imaging trickery to superimpose the image of her onto the background, but I can assure everyone that I really did go to this location and shoot the photo there. The natural lighting was perfect for what I was trying to accomplish. Another example is the photo of Nevra, and in this photo I focused more on color and not so much on background. It was a more subjective approach. There was a park about five miles away from my house, and the township had just recently built a new playground there. I went to this park during sunset and set the doll up at the playground. From then on, I fired away with my digital camera, capturing several shots of Nevra until I chose one that I thought was best. It was a difficult photo not in terms of the actual photography, but finding a location that best suited Nevra. I had taken a photo of Fianna days prior to Nevra, and that photo was so stunning and amazing that I could not find a location as good as the one I went to where the photo of Fianna was shot. Some of the best locations were 30 to 40 miles away from my house, and (since I mentioned Fianna) those locations would be used for future Bratz photography projects such as "Funkin' Out Fianna." Basically, I allowed my imagination and creativity to go everywhere in this first set of Bratz photos. I admit having broken a few laws and invading private property to capture these shots, and I also admit enduring the embarrassment from people watching what I was doing and laughing at me because of it — proof that society has a distinct antagonistic view about photography both as a hobby and as a business, especially when it is photography of dolls. However, I really don't care what people think, because I am very proud of the work I had accomplished with this set of photos and will continue to do this photography for as long as it takes. | ||||||||
